I would recommend choosing something that provides portability - so you can move from tool to tool - is free or inexpensive, and cross-platform. On the upside, Notability will record audio that links to your notes, which makes it excellent for note-taking during lectures. And when it comes to that, there are a ton of iPad choices like Goodnotes, Noteshelf, and my favorite, Notability. It has excellent integration with iOS and macOS. On the hardware handwriting side, I’ve been playing with the expensive but nicely designed, Remarkable2 e-ink tablet. On the web Roam and Notion are, I think, very exciting tools with a new paradigm that works quite well. I maintain my markdown-based blog with emacs and Tramp-mode, or with Panic’s Nova, which is a great Mac-ish all-in-one solution (markdown editor, terminal, sftp, etc.) It’s in active development and is feature rich but easy to get started with.Īs an old-schooler, I really like emacs’s org-mode. It’s cross-platform and supports a number of cloud services for storage. I would take a look at the free and open-source Joplin. Microsoft’s OneNote is powerful, but maybe overkill. A lot of people like Bear - it’s very simple, as is SimpleNote or even the free Google Keep, which keeps getting better. Both are based on an older tool called Zettlr, which is inspired by (rabbit-hole warning) the Zettlekasten method.Įvernote used to be a good choice, but it’s become pretty expensive and I fear for its future. Ulysses is great, but so is another Andy favorite, Scrivener. I’ve spent a lot of time on this subject, looking for the perfect tool.

Yes, Talbot is a forward, but he is a very solid defensive forward that can play against solid opposition, kills penalties very effectively, plays in all situations and has a wealth of playoff experience. Talbot helps to address Colorado’s defense. The question then becomes do you try to fit him in the lineup somewhere else or see what you can get from him? The Avalanche are obviously happy with their offensive production without Downie’s presence, so they found what they could get for him. Duchene and O’Reilly are both much better at anticipating the play than Downie is and it was obvious on the ice. Watching those three play together, Downie could make some solid passes and get some good scoring chances but, as a whole, Downie was a few steps behind Duchene and O’Reilly in the way they see the game. He was out of place on the line with Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly. Steve Downie was the expendable guy on the roster. This trade improves an area of concern for the Avalanche and does so without giving up a ton of value.ĭon’t get me wrong, Downie is a valuable player, and the Avalanche will miss the crazy factor that he can bring to the team, but the Avalanche shouldn’t skip a beat in the meantime. Something that I’ve been hearing a lot since the trade happened is “Why make this move? The team is 10-1, and you want to mess with the chemistry like this?” The response is simple, if you find an opportunity to improve your team and address a need, then you make it. Still, knowing Patrick Roy and his desire to constantly improve, it isn’t too much of a shock that some type of a move was made, but what does it mean for the team? Why Make the Deal? Based on Colorado’s 10-1-0 record, the move came as a bit of a surprise with all the early success. On Halloween Day, the Colorado Avalanche made another splash in the trade market by sending pesky forward Steve Downie to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Maxime Talbot. This means that there is no single bottleneck to the confirmations for all of the transactions.Įssentially, with the Harmony approach, connection latency is greatly reduced and the transaction throughput can scale as the network grows. This allows the network to process numerous different transactions in parallel. The Harmony consensus protocol, which they call Effective Proof of Stake, uses the latest design principles such as sharding and pipelining. Network Communication in a round of Consensus. However, PoS has its own unique challenges. Indeed the Ethereum protocol is trying to move to their Casper PoS consensus to address their scalability issues. Other protocols such as Proof-of-Stake use different incentive mechanisms that overcome some of these challenges. Currently, blockchains such as Bitcoin's, use Proof-of-Work consensus protocols which have become inherently expensive and slow. Consensus Protocolīlockchains are goverened by consensus and the type of protocol used can drastically impact on the speed with which decentralised consensus is achieved. These include dApps such as decentralised exchanges, high-throughput payment systems and Internet-of-Things transactions. They have built in a number of important innovations into their Consensus Protocol, internal systems and network engineering.īy implementing these innovations, Harmony will provide a platform for Decentralised Applications (dApps) which were not feasible on other blockchains. In order to achieve the goals of scalability the Harmony built the entire technology stack from the ground up with a focus on optimisation. It’s been a busy year at Harmony, so let’s dig in and explore some of the details of the progress being made. The project has also been able to migrate from the ERC-20 and BEP-2 tokens originally issued to its own native tokens.įinally, the project has implemented a staking system based on Effective Proof of Stake (EPoS). This incentivizes users and could be used for credit ratings, ad exchanges, and other data sharing that’s traditionally seen centralized platforms profiting and users being left with nothing.Īfter launching its mainnet in June 2019 Harmony has seen excellent growth, and as of June 2020 there are more than 1,000 nodes helping to decentralize the network. Harmony also uses its zero-knowledge proofs to enable data sharing with consumer privacy. In practice, Harmony helps businesses to build marketplaces for fungible token usage (such as loyalty points or energy credits) and non-fungible assets (such as in-game digital assets). Harmony also implements optimal cross-shard routing and fast block propagation. The technical focus of the project is on resharding and secure staking with decentralized randomness. They plan to address the issues faced in other blockchain ecosystems through the use of the best research and engineering practices in an optimally tuned system. Harmony provides a high-throughput, low-latency and low-fee consensus platform designed to power the decentralized economy of the future. I will also analyse the long term adoption potential of their ONE token. I will dig into their technology, team and development. In this Harmony review I will give you everything you need to know to make that decision. This after completing a large private seed sale back in May of 2018. An X-ray beam is shot at a crystal-or in Franklin’s case, a fiber of DNA-and the X-rays diffract and ricochet off of individual atoms like a ball in a pinball machine. While the specific technologies have progressed tremendously, the basic concept behind the technique remains the same. X-ray crystallography was invented in 1912 by physicist William Henry Bragg and his son William Lawrence Bragg and is still used today to determine molecular structures. The evidence for a double helix was glaringly obvious-for those who understood X-ray crystallography. In his book The Double Helix, James Watson himself wrote, “The instant I saw the picture my mouth fell open and my pulse began to race" 3. Some even argue that Watson and Crick would not have made their monumental discovery without knowledge of Franklin’s work. However, it is now well known that Franklin played an important role in developing this theory. Franklin’s article containing Photo 51 followed in the same issue, presented as experimental evidence supporting Watson and Crick’s theory 2. The discovery of DNA’s structure was initially credited to James Watson and Francis Crick, biologists at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, who first proposed their double helix model in the April 1953 issue of the scientific journal Nature 1. This photograph, known as Photo 51, was produced in 1952 by chemist and molecular biologist Rosalind Franklin and graduate student Raymond Gosling at King’s College in London, using a technique called X-ray crystallography. That looks like DNA, right? I didn’t think so either, but this image forever changed our understanding of DNA. But how was this structure discovered? How did scientists determine such an intricate design without being able to see DNA under a microscope? The answer came largely from this picture seen above. Today, “double helix” is so intertwined with our understanding of DNA that a Google image search of the phrase brings up diagram after diagram of the molecule. What does it look like? You probably envisioned the twisted ladder-like structure known as the double helix. Johnson showed early brilliance in West Virginia schools by being promoted several years ahead of her age, according to NASA. Although described as a behind-the-scenes sort of worker, she helped many people get promoted or become supervisors. "She discovered that occasionally it was something as simple as a lack of a couple of courses, or perhaps the location of the individual, or perhaps the assignments given them, and of course, the ever present glass ceiling that most women seemed to encounter," stated the biography.Īfter 30 years with NACA and NASA (at which point she was an engineer), Jackson decided to become an equal opportunity specialist to help women and minorities. She also tried to help other women advance in their career, according to the biography, by advising them on what educational opportunities to pursue. Her job was to extract the relevant data from experiments and flight tests. She began her career as a schoolteacher, and took on several other jobs before joining NACA.Īs a computer with the all-black West Area Computing section, she was involved with wind tunnels and flight experiments. She graduated with high marks from high school and received a bachelor of science degree from the Hampton Institute in Mathematics and Physical Science, according to a biography posted on NASA's website. Here are brief biographies of these women: Mary Jackson (1921-2005) "Hidden Figures" focuses on three computers, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughan. However, segregation policies required that these women work in a separate section, called the West Area Computers-although computing sections became more integrated after the first several years.Īs the years passed and the center evolved, the West Computers became engineers, (electronic) computer programmers, the first black managers at Langley and trajectory whizzes whose work propelled the first American, John Glenn, into orbit in 1962. Langley began recruiting African-American women with college degrees to work as computers, according to NASA. For example: Williamina Fleming is best known for classifying stars based on their temperature, and Annie Jump Cannon developed a stellar classification system still used today (from coolest to hottest stars: O, B, A, F, G, K, M.)ĭuring World War II, the computer pool was expanded. These women made discoveries still fundamental to astronomy today. In the late 19th and early 20thcentury, female “computers” at Harvard University analyzed star photos to learn more about their basic properties. The computers worked at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Virginia. The job title designated someone who performed mathematical equations and calculations by hand, according to a NASA history. " Hidden Figures," a 2016 book by Margot Lee Shetterly and a movie based on the book, celebrates the contributions of some of those workers.īeginning in 1935, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a precursor of NASA, hired hundreds of women as computers. Behind the scenes, they were supported by hundreds of unheralded NASA workers, including "human computers" who did the calculations for their orbital trajectories. In the 1960s, Mercury astronauts Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn and others absorbed the accolades of being the first men in space. The way different people react differently from each other is a continual source of confusion for Harry. What makes him a hero nevertheless is that he doesn't quit even if it means discovering personal betrayal. He lets those few emotional connections he is able to make with people cloud his judgments whilst assuming guilt on the part of those he doesn't like. The real mystery of the story rests within the human interactions and what is important vs what is trivial. The relationships of a group of emotionally broken people hinting at personal guilt over sordid pasts thrown together by less than ideal circumstances don't always tie in with the actual narrative. The first half of this film is such a dull and plodding downbeat soap opera that it challenges the patience of the viewer. Normally distant Harry has difficulty separating his personal feelings from the facts. A routine case shuffled off to him by a rival, the matter nevertheless evolves into a complicated multiple murder plot. Private investigator Harry Moseby (Hackman) has his hands full retrieving a teen runaway (Griffith) from the Florida Keys back to Los Angeles. Title (Brazil): "Um Lance no Escuro" ("A Bid in the Dark") Note: On 26 October 2014 I saw this movie again on DVD and now my vote is eight. It is also great to see again the gorgeous vanished actresses Jennifer Warren and Susan Clark. It is also interesting to see James Woods also in the beginning of career in a supporting role. The 18 year-old Melanie Griffith in her first credited role is extremely sexy and beautiful, undressing easily along the film. The top-notch actor Gene Hackman in the top of his successful career performs a detective that snoops the lives of other people and is incapable to see that his marriage is deteriorating. "Night Moves" is a different and complex detective story, supported by an engaging and flawed screenplay and great characters development. With the recent death of Arthur Penn, I decide to see again "Night Moves", a movie that I watched in the 80's and was forgotten in my collection. But sooner he finds that the initially missing person case is actually a complex smuggling operation of a valuable artifact. When Harry learns that Delly has died in a car crash, he suspects of Quinten. Harry and Ellen have a long conversation trying to solve their marriage problems. After seeing an accident in the sea, the reluctant Delly surprisingly accepts to return to Los Angeles with Harry to live with her mother. Harry is welcomed by Paula (Jennifer Warren), who works with Tom in a boat and has an open relationship with him. Then he visits the stuntman Marv Ellman (Anthony Costello) and the stunt coordinator Joey Ziegler (Ed Binn) and follows the new lead, heading to Florida Keys, where Delly would be living with her stepfather Tom Iverson (John Crawford). Meanwhile, Harry finds that his wife Ellen Moseby (Susan Clark) is cheating him and he has difficulties to handle the situation. Harry discovers that the runaway girl has a promiscuous life and uses drugs, and he tracks down her last boyfriend Quinten (James Woods), who works as a mechanic on the sets. In Los Angeles, the private detective and former athlete Harry Moseby (Gene Hackman) is hired by the retired obscure Hollywood actress Arlene Iverson (Janet Ward) to find her 16 year-old missing daughter Delly Grastner (Melanie Griffith). The thickness of the frames: This is where you can have some more fun. This will mostly depend on how often you’ll wear your glasses and how heavy you want them to feel on your face. The material: There aren’t a whole lot of options here, so this will be easy. The frame color: What clothing color do you wear the most? Do you want an adventurous design? Do you have to dress up a lot? These are all questions that will help you pick the right color for your lifestyle. You’ll still have to choose the finer points Yes, you might still have to try a bunch of pairs on, but at least you have the style narrowed down, and that will help you and the optometrist.
